Computer-aided or computer-assisted translation (CAT) is a form of translation wherein a human translator translates a text using some of the wide range of software tools designed to support the translation process. These tools include spell checkers, grammar checkers, translation memory tools (Trados, across etc.), terminology management tools (MultiTerm, crossTerm etc.) or quality assurance tools. CAT tools is often used synonymously with translations memory tools.
Machine translation (MT) is a form of translation wherein a text is translated solely by a software tool. Machine translation for many language pairs is available on the Internet for free and its output may sometimes be sufficient to grasp the gist of a text. However, it can hardly ever substitute a professional human translation if the target text is supposed to be understood to its full extent and/or presented in public.
While we utilize CAT tools on a daily basis to provide more accurate translations, we never resort to machine translation. We also do not offer post-editing after machine translation supplied by someone else.
